Workpage Structure
The whole ARROWS project is broken down in 8 Work Packages (WPs), as follow:
- WP1 – Archaeology inspired methodology
- WP2 – Archaeological robot design and construction
- WP3 – Planning, control and communication architecture for multiple AUV operations
- WP4 – Archaeological scene understanding and site securing
- WP5 – Tools for fruition of archaeological items and sites
- WP6 – Testing activity
- WP7 – Dissemination and exploitation of results
- WP8 – Project Management
WP1 inspires the whole project which will be addressed by the archaeologist needs; this WP identifies the necessities of underwater archaeology and the criteria for the knowledge fruition. Moreover it will deal with all the phases of the testing missions, also evaluating their final results. WP2 is about the design and the construction of the vehicles from every point of view (mechanical, hydrodynamic, self-localization sensors, control, integration of vision technologies, integration of excavation devices, etc. ). Vehicles belong to two classes: the AUV vehicle class and the biomimetic robot one.
WP3 deals with the cooperation and coordination of the whole team, addressing issues about the communication network and multi-vehicle interaction.
WP4 deals with the underwater scene understanding and site securing. WP4 will focus on the choice of on board payload, the design and the implementation of both real-time and post-process archaeology aimed algorithms and the definition of the site securing system.
WP5 is dedicated to the development of the tools for the fruition of archaeological items and sites. The methods of collecting and making easily accessible to both archaeology experts and to the public the knowledge that will be acquired through the ARROWS system will be here defined.
WP6 is dedicated to field integration and testing of the underwater robot system. This WP provides dry and bench tests on single elements and on assemblages and tests at sea in shallow waters in order to verify the abilities and performances of the vehicles.
WP7 is dedicated to the dissemination and exploiting of results. Dissemination activity will be carried out through a promotional web portal, with a differentiated access, that will provide results, public deliverables, papers and information about the project oriented to both the experts and the public.
WP8 is reserved to the project management.
The WPs cover each aspect of the project: the scientific methodologies (WP1 – WP5); the integration and experimental validation for the developed methodologies (WP6); dissemination and exploiting (WP7); the project management (WP8).
The main feature of ARROWS is that all the project is led by archaeology inspiration with the aim to provide technological solutions able to meet the archaeologist needs. In order to achieve this aim it is necessary to develop the technological WPs (WP2 – WP4) according to the indication derived by WP1. The technological products coming from the group WP2 – WP4 will be tested in WP6 and will allow us to collect a lot of information that will be made accessible thanks to the tools developed in WP5. The dissemination and disclosure of the results of the project is managed by the dedicated WP7.
